What More Is There to Emotion Concepts Than Prototypes?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Russell's principal claim is that a characterization of emotion concepts in terms of prototypes offers the most fruitful approach to understanding emotion. He contrasts this position with the classical view that emotion categories have necessary and sufficient conditions. The focal issue concerns whether the two views of emotion concepts that Russell contrasts really are incompatible. Reasons are offered for supposing that concepts in general embody both representations of prototypes and of theory-laden information, some of which might be compatible with a classical view. The proposal is made that the primary utility of the prototype representation is as a heuristic for the identification of instances, whereas other parts of the conceptual representation support reasoning and explanation processes, as well as providing a backup for cases in which the similarity-tothe-prototype heuristic fails.

By increasing the number of images, it is essential to provide fast search methods and intelligent filtering of images. To handle images in large datasets, some relevant tags are assigned to each image to for describing its content. Automatic Image Annotation (AIA) aims to automatically assign a group of keywords to an image based on visual content of the image. AIA frameworks have two main sta...
متن کاملEmotional conception: how embodied emotion concepts guide perception and facial action.
This study assessed embodied simulation via electromyography (EMG) as participants first encoded emotionally ambiguous faces with emotion concepts (i.e., "angry,""happy") and later passively viewed the faces without the concepts. Memory for the faces was also measured. At initial encoding, participants displayed more smiling-related EMG activity in response to faces paired with "happy" than in ...

Introduction We shall present 2 studies that are part of a larger research project that investigated pre-adolescents’ knowledge of emotion concepts i.e., how pre-adolescents conceptualize emotions, and whether emotion categories are conceptually organized around prototypes, as found for adults (e.g., Fehr & Russell, 1984) by analysing the meaning and the organization of the emotional lexicon. S...
متن کاملTrends and developments: research on emotions Courants et tendances: recherche sur les émotions
Defining ‘‘emotion’’ is a notorious problem. Without consensual conceptualization and operationalization of exactly what phenomenon is to be studied, progress in theory and research is difficult to achieve and fruitless debates are likely to proliferate. A particularly unfortunate example is William James’s asking the question ‘‘What is an emotion?’’ when he really meant ‘‘feeling’’, a misnomer...
